The days may be shorter and the mornings may be dewy, but there is still fantastic fall cruising to be done. Over the next month there are four great cruising destinations. Yes, three of the options may be on Salt Spring Island, but if you’re someone who likes to escape the summer crowds fall cruising can be ideal. Here’s four great options for cruising ideas this fall.
Fall Fair – September 16 to September 17
The Salt Spring Island Farmers’ Institute Fall fair is a great way to kick off fall cruising. Whether you enjoy checking out the adorable rabbits, critiquing the decorated cakes, or enjoy sitting in the beer garden, attending the Fall Fair is a great way to spend the weekend.
Working Boat Festival – September 23
The Westcoast Work Boat Association has their Fall Rendezvous the weekend of September 22nd, with vessels open to the public on Saturday afternoon for viewing. Whether or not you missed the Wooden Boat Festival, this is another great event to see beautiful boats. These boats vary from active, retired and renovated work boats ranging from Washington to Alaska. Grab a coffee and spend Saturday afternoon strolling the docks looking at the beautiful working boats on our coast.
Apple Festival – October 1
Salt Spring Island is home to over 450 varieties of apples, with 75 varieties at one farm! Experience Salt Spring Islands rich apple history, dating back to 1860. This event is a popular destination festival, why not avoid the crowded ferry and cruise over on your boat! Dungeness Crab and Seafood Festival – October 6 to October 8
Take a rain cheque on Canadian Thanksgiving and enjoy a great sail over to Port Angeles and join in the dungeness crab and seafood festivities. With event features including local beer and wine, live music, cooking demonstrations with celebrity chefs and a Grab-a-Crab Derby, this is a great non traditional Thanksgiving cruise!
